You’ve all heard the story. Promising young athlete with the world at their feet, experiences some adversity in their sport or life and things take a turn, for the worst…

This athlete was a star in the gym, fit as a fiddle, skilful as they come… But put him in competition and, well, he choked.

His coach contacted me one month before the junior Olympics in Argentina. Not only was this young man due to represent his country at the Junior Olympics, but if he performed well, he would be selected for the national team as a senior and as a result, become a full time, professional athlete. He was on the precipice of making his dream come true… No pressure…

We spoke about his training regimen, his competition schedule, his routine on the day, his physical warm up, his mental preparation and everything in between. His issues started to become clear…

We formulated a plan to get him as mentally, emotionally and physically prepared as possible for the impending tournament and set to work. Our sessions together were intensive- rewiring the neurological software in someone’s subconscious mind isn’t always a walk in the park. But he was a good soldier. He did as he was instructed…

He felt great after our last session before flying out to Argentina. However, the proof would be in the pudding. Would he be able to perform as well as he was capable, under the bright lights, the big stage, that remained to be seen?

I checked in with him the day after he had competed. He was disappointed… He finished in the worst place possible. Fourth. Just outside the medals. Gutting as can be. HOWEVER, he was so close to getting on the podium, he was only just beaten by his adversaries. He performed amazingly, so his coach informed me, he was just beaten by better people on the day. As a result, he had been selected for the senior national team and from this moment forward, was now a full-time professional athlete.

Dream. Come. True.

If the mind is willing, we can achieve tremendous things. If you are ready to take your performance to the next level, to win that trophy, to get promoted to the league above, to turn professional and earn more money doing what you love.
